My newfound obsession with 12 Monkeys continues! Last night I watched the short film that inspired it. Chris Marker's La Jetée (1962) is about a man in post-apocalyptic Paris sent through time in an attempt to find solutions for a crumbling world. The protagonist has been haunted by an image from his childhood involving a beautiful woman at an airport and someone being shot -- much like James Cole's (Bruce Willis) dream in 12 Monkeys. I'll let you figure out the rest...
Much more straight-forward storytelling, but it still manages to be compelling.
